The rep counter being free is the part that matters most. Why the free side is not crippled
A workout game with a paywalled leaderboard is a worse workout game. Rank means something because everyone is on the same board, and a clan is worth joining because your clanmates can actually take part in the weekly boss. Fragmenting the player base to protect a subscription would damage the exact thing the subscription sits on top of.
It also fails on its own terms. The moment money can move you up a leaderboard, nobody can read the leaderboard, including the people who paid. A ranking is a claim about work done, and it stops being a claim about anything the first time it can be bought. So the clan and season systems stay free, and the subscription sells pace instead.
